The best way to deal with already damaged hair is to ensure you get it cut regularly by a reputable hair stylist. This especially goes for those who love to grow out their hair. If you want to keep your long, luscious locks but keep healthy hair, you’re better off getting a small amount cut off every so often. A small haircut is a tiny sacrifice to make if you want to maintain the overall health and longevity of your hair style.

Use Natural Oils to Protect and Revitalise Your Hair

Using natural oils on your hair not only gives it a smooth look and a healthy shine, it provides protection from future damage, whether it be split ends or the heat of a hot styling tool. The thickness of the oil creates a protective layer along the strand of hair and the tip of the cuticle. There are so many oils to choose from, including argan oil, olive oil, coconut oil and macadamia oil. Each has their own benefits, such as banishing kinks or making hair glossy, so it is best to find the oil that suits the needs of your hair.

When it comes to applying oil on your hair, start from the tips and work your way to the top. Be sure to not use too much oil as this can make your hair appear stringy and greasy. You only need a few drops, less if you have thin hair and more if you have thicker hair. Avoid applying oil anywhere near the area of your scalp. This is because your hair produces its own oil at the base of the scalp and excessive oil can lead to a shiny, greasy appearance. Natural oils can do wonders to brighten the appearance of your hair!

Avoid Using Hot Styling Tools – For Now!

If you already have damaged hair, avoid using hot styling tools like irons and straighteners for a short amount of time. Heat can cause damaged hair to worsen and it can even lead to hair breakage! If you want to avoid any more damage, stay away from hot styling tools. Instead of using a hair dryer, let your hair air-dry. To dry damaged hair, blot the wet hair with a towel but avoid vigorous rubbing as this can lead to further hair breakage.  If you desperately need to blow dry your hair, wait until your hair has gone from being dripping wet to damp.

Once it is ready, keep the nozzle of your blow dryer at a distance from your hair and avoid yanking your strands as you blow dry it. If you’re an avid hair straightener and you have damage, wait until you get it cut before straightening it again! To avoid damage in the future, use heat protective sprays before you straighten your hair. Also be sure to keep your hair on the hot plate for no more than five seconds when you straighten it. By being mindful of how you use your hot styling tools, you can be sure to avoid damaged hair in the future.

Avoid Chemical Treatments

If you have damaged hair, avoid using chemical treatments until your hair has been cut. Some of the main culprits of chemical treatment damage include chemical perms, bleaching and colour treatments, some of which contain the chemical peroxide. Peroxide can actually break down the natural protective layers of the hair and can cause your hair massive damage. If chemical straightening is important to you and the needs of your hair, consider doing a keratin treatment instead. Using keratin, this treatment will straighten your hair whilst doing far less damage than a standard chemical straightening treatment. To help protect the longevity of your hair, consider avoiding chemical treatments.

Use a Quality Shampoo and Conditioner

If you want to maintain the health of your hair, be sure to use a quality shampoo and conditioner. The best kinds of shampoos and conditioners contain natural oils, anti-breakage or strengthening formulas and are sulphate-free. If you already have damaged hair, consider using a conditioner that contains macadamia nut oil or argan oil. These oils can make damaged hair look healthier and thicker and provide a protective layer around each strand. You can find quality shampoos and conditioners at your local hair stylist.

There is also a myth that hair needs to be shampooed on a regular basis.  However, this is in fact harmful to your hair and strips it of its natural oils, causing brittleness and irreversible damage. At the most, you should shampoo your hair around twice a week.
