5 Natural Hair Remedies That Actually Work!

Store-bought shampoos, conditioners and styling products may be a necessity in your hair care regime. However, over-use can coat your hair shafts with silicone and cause not-so-nice product build-up. After a great easy-fix, coin-saving solution? Raid your pantry! Here are five of our top natural hair remedies.

#1 – Honey

Not just perfect as a spread on your buttery toast, honey is a wonderful natural hair treatment for a number of sweet reasons. It’s an emollient, which means it seals moisture in your hair and keeps it conditioned, which can reduce breakage. It also strengthens the hair follicles and cleans them by getting rid of impurities which can minimise hair loss and stimulate re-growth.

Diluting honey in warm water can also work as an effective dandruff remedy that can clear up itchiness and flakiness, and it also has rich antibacterial and antiseptic properties that can prevent scalp infections and eczema.

Not fond of the stickiness that comes with using honey on your hair? Look for products that contain hydroxypropyltrimonium honey. Hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride is an organic, water-soluble compound that is often used in shampoos as a conditioning agent. It works by neutralizing the negative charges on your hair strands (that can cause static and tangling), and will hydrate damaged areas of your hair without them feeling overly sticky.

#2 – Avocado

Avocado is another natural ingredient that’s ideal for treating damaged hair. Avocadoes are rich in fatty amino acids and natural oils that coat the hair shafts, help them retain moisture and provide deep and long lasting hydration.

They are also rich in antioxidants that help prevent damage from free radicals (keeping your hair healthier for longer), and they contain vitamins A, B6, D and E that nourish your hair and scalp. This fruit (yes! it’s a fruit!) can also help unclog hair follicles and stimulate new hair growth.

Not sure how to use it? Mash a ripe avocado, mix with an egg and then apply it to wet hair. Slap on a nanna-like shower cap to help the mixture infuse even more effectively. Leave it on for at least 20 minutes, rinse several times and repeat once a week if you have damaged hair, or once a month to give your hair a healthy boost.

#3 – Apple cider vinegar

Yes, you’ve probably heard a lot about the benefits of apple cider vinegar in terms of improving gut health, however this oh-so-natural product is also a fantastic organic hair care treatment.

Hair and the natural oils that come from our scalp (known as sebum) normally have a pH level of between 4.5 and 5.5, and when kept at this level of acidity, the scalp is safeguarded against bacterial and fungal growth, keeping our hair healthy. Apple cider vinegar is not only high in acetic acid, it has a pH level that’s close to that of human hair, so regularly rinsing with it can help bring it back to it’s ideal acidity levels, particularly if you have oily hair.

Apple cider vinegar is also a potent antimicrobial, so it can kill off the bacteria and fungus that are common underlying causes of both dandruff and hair loss. It can also encourage hair growth by stimulating blood circulation to the hair follicles, prevent split ends and breakage, and reduce hair product build-up, which can leave hair looking dull, flat and lifeless.

Chemical treatments and environmental exposure can also wreak havoc on hair because it causes high porosity, and unfortunately too-porous hair can absorb liquid quickly, but loses it just as quickly. The damage caused creates gaps and holes in the surface of the hair shaft, leaving it more prone to further damage, and while you can’t change the porosity of your hair, an apple cider vinegar rinse can flatten the cuticles and help minimise the gaps.

Using apple cider vinegar as a natural hair treatment can also add shine and gloss, define curls and it’s also a fantastic detangler and de-frizzer. Apply a vinegar rinse once a week, or if your hair needs a serious bout of TLC, mix with a couple of egg whites and a little olive oil then let it infuse under your shower cap before you shampoo and rinse out.

#4 – Tea

Not just a nerve-soother in times of stress, tea is also one of the ideal natural hair remedies that is only a scrounge around in the pantry away! Green tea in particular is great for fighting dandruff and stimulating hair growth because of its nutrient and antioxidant content. It also nourishes your scalp and protects it from nasties like fungus, bacteria and dandruff.

A variety of teas can also enhance your hair’s natural colour in between salon visits. Chamomile is great for brightening blonde hair, and it’s also softening and scalp soothing. Redheads should reach for teas like rooibos, and black tea is ideal for deepening darker hair.

Have you been losing clumps of hair every time you wash or style? One of the biggest reasons we lose hair is due to a hormone called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Black tea contains caffeine which blocks DHT, so using it can thicken and strengthen your hair and allow the individual strands of your hair to flourish.

How do you use tea as a natural hair care remedy? Simply steep your tea in boiling water for an hour (add some before-mentioned honey for softness and shine), strain, cool and then add it to a spray bottle. Spray it on your scalp, massage it well through your hair, pop on a shower cap and then leave it for 30 minutes before rinsing with cold water.

#5 – Natural Oils

Another pantry staple, olive oil is very similar to the natural oils found in your scalp and hair, and therefore it can help to replenish the oils that are missing in dry and damaged hair. Use it as a pre-shampoo treatment by warming it up in the microwave, massaging into your scalp, and then leaving for around 45 minutes to infuse under your shower cap before you shampoo and rinse.

Avocado oil is another organic hair care treatment that’s a great source of vitamins B and E, and because it spreads quickly and doesn’t weigh hair down, it can also be used as a leave-in conditioner. Perfect for dry and/or damaged hair, it softens, replenishes strength and moisture and provides wonderful shine. Thank you pantry!
