The best & worst celebrity hairstyles of 2017

Who doesn’t love a good hair makeover? For some, it signifies a fresh start to a new year, for others it’s a form of catharsis after a break up, and some people just see it as a bi-annual style update. Changing our hairstyle is, quite simply, a quick way to embrace change and to define an exciting new chapter in our lives.

So who better to look to for inspiration than our favourite celebrities who are at the forefront of style, fashion and their sky’s the-limit beauty budgets? So if you’ve seriously been loving the phrase ‘New Year, New You’ lately but need a tad more inspiration, let’s look back at some of the best celebrity hairstyles of 2017.

2018 Cuts – from Bangs to Blunt to Buzz

Lovers of length celebrated songster Katy Perry’s long blond wig on her Instagram page in April, which she followed up with a stylish boxer-braided number a few hours later, and actress Emma Stone showed off her extension-assisted transformation in August for her new 2018 Netflix series, Maniac.

Lobs were the serious celebrity hairstyle of choice for a number of starlets in 2017, with Demi Lovato trading in her long flowing locks for a shorter choppier lob in March, and former beauty queen Olivia Culpo embracing the warm spring (US) weather in April with a rumpled, shoulder-length lob.

Actress Salma Hayek took the Cannes Film Festival by storm in May with her caramel-coloured blunt lob, Bella Hadid shocked us all with her blunt-ish lob which premiered at the Met Gala in May, and actress Mila Kunis flaunted her own shoulder length version in late September.

Personality/model/socialite Kylie Jenner showed off her non nonsense bob in late Jan, Selena Gomez jumped on the bandwagon with a longer version in Feb, and a choppier, cropped version was introduced by actress Vanessa Hudgens in spring.

Sleek was the name of the game for drama queen Kerry Washington’s bob cut that replaced her previous ho-hum ponytail and- fringe combo, J.Lo ditched her Cher-inspired waist length style with a stylish fresh cut in March, and not to be outdone, Ms Kimmie Kardashian went for a blunt chop the same month (hair envy we suspect) to replace her seriously poker-straight long locks.

Singer Katy Perry brandished a platinum pixie cut in April, and undergoing a serious 2017 transformation, beautiful Blake Lively ditched her long, blonde lushness for a dark pixie cut, truly nailing her mix-it- up abilities later in the year.

Gwen Stefani showed off a seriously gorgeous set of blunt bangs (that’s fringe action people) on the Voice in April, followed up by Selena Gomez rocking some serious bangs in July ahead of her 25 th birthday bash. Surprisingly, buzz cuts were one of the more popular celebrity haircuts featured in 2017. Former vampire Kristen Stewart created some serious blonde buzz debuting her shaved look in March, followed by Lenny’s daughter, Zoë Kravitz, who apparently took the plunge to avoid the horrors of bleaching.

Kate Hudson was spotted in July with a completely shaved head (for the movie Sister) and model-now- actress Cara Delevingne, did a seriously poor job of trying to hide her shave job under a bright orange wig on the set of her upcoming film, Life In A Year.

2018 Colour – From Blonde to Brown to Brunette

Do blondes really have more fun? Emma Stone seems to think so. Prior to her extension overhaul later on in the year, Emma said see ya! to her signature red locks, returning to her roots (quite literally) as a natural-born blonde in June. Supermodel Gigi Hadid also had a super-overhaul in June swapping her light brown locks for a sunny blonde style, and Victoria's Secret Angel Karlie Kloss debuted her platinum blonde do at the Christian Dior show during Paris Fashion Week in July.

Actress Shailene Woodley went from a brunette to a solid blonde in May, and in September, actress Emilia Clarke celebrated one of GOT’s most famous hairstyles when she brought her trademark Khaleesi hue into real world, swapping her natural brunette mane for sumptuous platinum.

Leading the way in Autumn hair colour inspiration was actress Elle Fanning with her sunny gold tresses, actress Emma Roberts switched to a new rich brown shade (known as smoky quartz) in March (brown, red, blonde – is there any colour she can’t wear?), and recently-seen- Down-Under Paris Jackson traded in her golden locks for a perfectly tousled brunette style for the Teen Choice Awards in August.

2018 – The Weird and the Wonderful

And in terms of celebrity hair transformations, every day is a good day when you take some serious risks with your head gear, and a heap of celebs were seriously rocking the rainbow love in 2018. RiRi flaunted aqua blond, Halle Berry added violet highlights, actress Keke Palmer went with a grape soda explosion, and rapper Kesha upped her mermaid game with a transition to cool blue.

Did somebody say pink? Actress Taryn Manning rocked pastel pink, model Hailey Baldwin flirty peach strands, Bella Thorne a fluoro shade, actress Ashley Benson candy floss pink, and singer Perrie Edwards went for a crazy-cute bubblegum variety. And who went all out chasing that rainbow? Multi-coloured braids were the go for cutie-pie Hunger Games actress Amandla Stenberg, and of course one of the world’s greatest fashion chameleons, Lady Gaga, possibly
trumped the lot of ‘em with a rainbow combination to celebrate her world tour in July.
